Task 2 – Report on a Game Franchise
Game franchise: Devil May Cry
Game history/Statistics
Devi May Cry is a Gaming franchise that was
created over 10yrs ago by the company CAPCOM; it made its first appearance in
2001 as a fully released game on the PlayStation 2, called Devil May Cry. After
its first game, it became very popular and very successful, and so went on to
making 4 sequels in its name. Recently, a group of developers were inspired by
CAPCOMS Devil May Cry, and decided to use their ideas in order to create a new
version of the game named DMC, as a different spin on the game.
As you can see, the first Devil May Cry
towers over itrs sequals, ecept the 4rth game in the series.
The Game Devil
May Cry is all about demons and angels. The story starts with a demon named
Sparda, the king of all the demons. Him, and another demon named mundus, were
the most powerful demons in the world. Mundus hated humans, he despised them,
and so he planned on invaded the human world and taking over. But Sparda, for a
demon, had a kind heart. He fell in love with a human, named Eva. When Mundus fund out about
his love for a human, he started to dislike Sparda and treat him like one them.
Sparda, fully knowing that the human world was going to be invaded, decided to
sacrifice his life in the human world, and fight Mundus. As a result, the gates
to the underworld were shut by Sparda’s Demon powers, forever. The Game Devil

Before Sparda left Eva, he gave her two necklaces, and two children, one named Dante, the other named Vergil. Both possess the powers of Sparda and both have his blood running through their veins. Before the age of 12, Eva mysteriously died, leaving the two boys to grow up on their own. Dante grew u to become a demon killer/hunter with a very kind heart and soul, whereas Vergil ended had good intentions, but was very cruel as he wants to inherit Sparda’s full power and become the king of the underworld.
Soon after the first release of the original Devil May Cry, in 2007, the company decided to put more money into the idea of the devil may cry world. From a game franchise, it became an Anime. The Anime went on to make 12 episodes. They took the idea of the game, the story, and turned it into an anime using production ideas and film artistry. CAPCOM also increased its wide audience through the making of the short, yet good anime.
Here is a clip of the anime: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tn3KImTGP_4
In 1998, CAPCOM started putting final production into the completion of the new (at the time) Resident Evil game idea. Hideki Kamiya, started directing the game Resident Evil with an all new production team named “Team little Devil”. The team was sent to Spain for Some primary research, research into castles and medieval structures as a basis of the games environment. The man named “Tony” was supposed to be made invincible by biotechnology, and the style of fighting would’ve been fast and stylish. But, instead of halting production on the game, the team began making a new series based on modern horror with medieval, magical, and ancient weapons with demons as enemies. This new project was launched as Devil May Cry, and it was a success. Despite the success of the original Devil May Cry, they decided to make some changes to the franchise as a separate idea. The very first game was brought out on the PlayStation, but then the re-mastered version of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd games, were also released for the PlayStation3 and the Xbox360. Devil May Cry 4 also came out for both the Xbox and the PlayStation 3.

Devil May Cry the Game
Devil May Cry, was started as a new series idea from a change of mind from the production team of resident Evil, with a descent background story, that hooked many fans into loving the game. The franchise art style changes in various ways through all three Games and in the Anime. This first game begins its story about Dante, having met a woman Named Trish, who resembles his mother, who promised Dante an adventure to an island called Mallet Island. The original fighting system and mechanics for this game was very well done. It had no defence or any sort of blocking, but only an evasive side roll in order to dodge enemy attacks. The fighting was mostly based around the swords fighting and the way the character handles the swords. Combinations of different moves were very easy to pull off in this early system, and it still kept it stylish while satisfying. In order to help with distanced enemies or when attacking from afar, they added the stylish guns named “Ebony & Ivory” for Dante to use as side weapons. They further developed this idea by adding different guns to the game for the character to vary with. In total there are 5 Guns for use of the player. Here are the names of all the guns:
·
Sottogan – Shot gun
·
Ebony & Ivory – Hand Guns
·
Needle Gun
·
Nightmare Y & Nightmare β
·
Grenade Launcher
In this Game, there are fewer swords than
guns, even though the swords gave proven to be more potent on another scale.
The guns however do come in handy in underwater battles, such as the needle
gun, where the swords are useless. As for the Swords/Demon Arms there are only 3, but 4 if you include the true form of the force Edge, which is the true Sword of Sparda. Here are the names of the swords:
·
Alastor
·
Ifrit – Gauntlet
·
Force Edge – Original sword
·
Sword of Sparda
The strongest sword would probably the Sword of Sparda.
The entirety of the first game is based on the Mallet Island that consists of place such as the Old Ancient Castle, The Cathedral, Broken Bridge, the Garden, the Coliseum, and The Valley of the mist, the Lost Land, the Ghost ship and finally, the Mirror World.
http://devilmaycry.wikia.com/wiki/Ebony_%26_Ivory
The Very first Devil may cry, was supposed to be a horror adventure through an island, with a horror like approach. Evidence of this is shown by some of the enemy’s, such as the scare crows, the Walking puppets, and just the art style of the monsters within the game. Team little devil were inspired by there in production game at the time “Resident Evil”, hence the graphic style of the enemy’s. The setting of horror fit this game very well as it is about demons, which would make it easy to implement their ideas into a new game. The “Sin Scissors” enemy is a perfect example, of the creepy setting that the team gave the game:

Such vivid and horrifying enemies can be found in the devil may cry game. Here is a picture of the puppets:
As for the production research, they simply used the ideas from Resident Evil and changed them in order to fit the setting of Devil may cry as a scary slasher.

In 2003, the sequel to the first Devil May Cry, but yet very different to the original mind set of the game, for example, the fighting mechanics. The Fighting in devil may cry 2, is very slow compared to the first, and it also requires more precise timing in the buttons when being pressed, with much less mashing. It consists of more Arial combos, while the ground combos are very simple and do not carry on for very long, as they usually only consist of a couple moves.
The Devil Arms have also fully changed, as they do not have specialities about them, but now rather look like regular swords with different levels of power. The first weapon that you start off with is the Rebellion, A well balanced and powerful sword, Dante’s special. After rebellion you can find a none-specific sword named Merciless. It’s a long, very thin sword, specifically designed for a long reach in distance, but with less raw damage. This sword just like other weapons in the game can be upgraded; the upgrades consist of mostly damage. But the sword with the most damage is the Vendetta. The Vendetta is a very big and broad sword, with two opposite points leaning towards the sides of the sword at the very end, as the sword has no Apex on the blade. This sword alone has pure natural raw damage, more than any of the other swords in the game. The moves between the swords don’t ever change either.
The setting for Devil May Cry 2 is a city called “Vie De Marli”. The story centres Dante and a Girl named Lucia on their quest to stop a business man names Arius from raising the Demon Argosax and gaining supreme power.
The Game received Very mixed reviews unlike its very successful predecessor, in terms of marketing decisions and production development. Its biggest complaint was that the difficulty of the game was lowered compared to its first game, which upset many fans. The entire fighting system and mechanics of the game got its share of criticism as the combat was not refined to a level of a “sequel success” and with each of the weapons being different variants of the other by being stronger or weaker, rather than each weapon having its own specialties with its own advantages and disadvantages in combat. The Boss battles were criticised for less strategy required in free space. Furthermore, Dante received a change in personality which hit the fans very hard, as they did not like the sudden change for the previous game. His cockiness like attitude was considerably toned down, as he also rarely spoke at all in the game its self.
Personally, from what I have played and researched, the sequel to the first successor Devil may cry, did not/ was not nearly as good as the first game in hand, however, as a separate game of its own, it was a very well made game, with minor difficulty levels, Such as the difficulty of the campaign itself. As a devil may cry game, More development and audience research could have gone into this game, as it lacks the opinions of Devil May cry fans, and what would satisfy them in terms of what they can do in the actual game. As a slashing game, it has also fallen behind all other slashing games by a large portion, as it lacks the chaotic fighting and battling between monsters as other games have, except for what it lacks in, it makes up for having its own specialities. Specialities such as its different Devil trigger mode system and the levelling up of the weapons.
The Devil Trigger mechanic in this game was completely changed from what it originally was like in Devil May Cry 1. It changed from being a very simple power up, of strength, speed, agility, and sheer potential in Dante as a fighter, to having different variants between these different effects, instead of all of them being “All in one”. For example, in devil may cry 1, Devi trigger would enable the player to have/ gain extra moves, if they were bought from the store, moves that would increase Dante’s sheer and raw damage between call of his sword transformations, making Devi trigger a very powerful asset indeed. It would also grant Dante the ability to fly, while using his Devil Arm Alastor, allowing Dante to use his lighting powers to their full extent. Where as in Devil may cry 2, Flying can only be used if the right Amulet or the right Shard piece f his Devil trigger Bar was used. This made wanting to combine different moves from the air to the ground very difficult as you could only have the ability of Speed, or flight, this became a huge struggle to many gamers as when faced with a foe that can easily switch between being an aerial fighter to becoming a ground based enemy. This would slow down game play as you would need to be constantly switching between the amulets as you are trying to defeat one enemy, or forced to be grounded and use ground based attacks on them. The Shards/Amulets would also change Dante’s and/or Lucia’s power types, for example, the most powerful in terms of strength and power, is the Red shard that can be found in an underground dungeon. It gives them both the ability of Flames, making all of their attacks imbued with fire element, for extra damage. Even the guns used have fire bullets or do extra fire damage with every strike on the enemy. Whereas the blue Shard, Grants the player Ice styled attacks, with Ice damage. When in devil trigger mode the player gains additional moves at the end of every combo.
The Sudden change in all of these forms, such as the fighting in the game, art style, demons, Bosses/Villains, and the touching effects of Dante’s personalities and behaviours, became the cause of the mixed reviews and multiple critics from an uncountable number of reviewers. Such a mess could have been avoided if the right research was put in place, towards the production of the game. These problems may only be present due to the original Devil may cry development team as actually changed. Considering that they were the original creators of the idea of the actual game, I fail to understand why they’re not put responsible for the development of the second game. Such a decision can affect games in very big and bad ways, but luckily, the game did very well for itself in comparison to how many people were actually disappointed.
Devil May Cry 3
Two years later after Devil May Cry 2, its supposed sequel came out, as Devil May Cry 3. Being very from the 2nd game, but not so different as to the first game, the designers clearly looked over the flaws that were put in place in the second game and have now put that data to very good use towards the success of the franchise. Devil May cry 3, story wise, would make sense as to follow up the first Devil May Cry, as its story actually does indeed fall in line with the first game, especially with the characters. For example, Trish, an acquaintance by the end of the first Devil May Cry, appears in this one too, as if this is based in the future after the events of Mallet Island, and after the defeat of the Demon King, Mounds. I terms of similarities, both games have very attributes in the way the sword fighting works, and how the mechanics work. This third is very similar to the first, except has some advanced features, which should be expected as this is a game created 4 years later, technology clearly advanced in that time.
The weapons in the game, gave me an impression the mechanics were going to be the same or similar as to the first game. For one, they brought back the devil arm powers as appose to having separate boring swords that are either stronger or weaker variants of the original rebellion. The entire shapes, sixe, looks, and power are all different when it comes to the devil arms in this game. They all also have unique techniques that can only be used in certain conditions or are better used for only certain conditions when facing a horde of demons. For example, Rebellion, is Dante’s Trademark sword, and tends to appear in all 4 games. Here is a list of the weapons in this game:
·
Rebellion
·
Agni &
Rudra
·
Cerberus
·
Nevan
·
Beowulf
When it comes to the fighting mechanics in
Devil May Cry, while using different Devil arms, there must always be a light,
a heavy and a long raged weapon at the player’s disposal. The long raged
weapons will always be the guns, but could also be used as heavy as there is a heavy
launchers in the game too. The heavy Devil arms are usually gauntlets, or fist
and kicks styled fighting weapon that can be charged to the max in order to
deal the most damage as possible. The others can be relatively anything, in
terms of how the weapon the works or how it looks.Cerberus
The first official boss that you fight as Dante is a Demon well known in many tells tails and myths of hell, The Demon Hell Gate Keeper Cerberus. In the Game, Cerberus is indeed the Gate keeper, with the power to control Ice, which he uses to encase himself in Ice Armour, Summon deadly icicles, and belch giant Icebergs. Each of his heads has different techniques, such as being able to pounce towards the player, or Bark so powerfully that the player is pushed away. Cerberus back paws are also missing, but he replaces them with Ice paws.
Cerberus is paid a visit by Dante near the beginning of the game, as the first boss, at the bottom of the Tower, At the Entrance.
In Greek mythology, Cerberus is the Hound of Hades, Lord of the Dead, and as I’ve mentioned before, the Gate Guardian of Hell. The punishments that he would give the prisoners of hell consist of nothing short of a nightmare, involving constant black rain and icy attacks.
Agni & Rudra the Firestorm
Agni & Rudra are also Gate keepers of the Temen-Ni-Gru Door, sealed away by Sparda. They are both demon swords, swung by demon hosts, in search of someone worthy of their power, in order to inherit them as swords. Agni is the Red sword, able to control fire/flames, and Rudra is the Blue sword, able to control wind and storms, hence the name the Firestorm.
In Hinduism, Agni is the God of fire, and Rudra is the God of the storm. Agni is also thought to be the God of sacrifices, and Rudra the God of Diseases.
Gigapede
Gigapede is a centipede like demon that entered the human world through a time space rift. On the outside, it possesses a very tough exoskeleton that’s very hard to breach through simple means, such as human swords or tools. It can also create electric shockwaves and can discharge lightning balls.
Leviathan
Leviathan is a hybrid creature, having features of a whale and an eel. It uses its eel like tails to swim through the air as it was water. Though his moth resembles that of a baleen whale, it has sharp red teeth. To give perspective, Dante can fit inside his eye, as if a room.
Leviathan is a creature of myth mentioned in the Old Testament, as a gigantic fish/sea monster, that cannot be killed by any man on earth. It said that at the end of time, God will kill it and the Behemoth, and its flesh will be served to the righteous on Banquet in a tent made from its skin.
Nevan
Nevan is a powerful demon witch can control and can summon lighting at will, while also being composed of magical bats. These bats seem to be a part of her, as if made of her own body, of which she can manipulate in any way she wants, such as changing them into magical whirlwinds, she can also use them to disappear into black smoke, and possesses a life draining kiss to replenish her own health.
Beowulf the Light Beast
Beowulf the light beast is another Gatekeeper of the Temen-Ni-Gru, was half blinded by Dante during their first fight. He was sealed away for 2000 years by Sparda.
